Design of Reinforced Concrete and Steel Structures
Acqui Terme (AL), 2004-2007
O&M Ingegneria

After years of neglect of the Teatro Garibaldi in Palermo, the owners entrusted O&M Ingegneria with the integrated design — architectural, structural and systems-related — of a new multi-purpose building to replace the pre-existing, now dilapidated structure. The new complex is spread over four floors and features a mixed steel and reinforced concrete structure, comprising: a private multi-storey car park, with helical ramps for vehicle access; commercial premises and offices; public spaces serving the neighbourhood; metal safety stairs and a lift for disabled access, ensuring accessibility.

The project connects with the adjacent Palazzo Papis, a listed building of historical significance. One of the main challenges concerned the controlled demolition of the old building, which was closely connected to Palazzo Papis and required the use of temporary reinforced concrete structures to ensure safety and stability throughout all operational phases.

The new structure rests on a shallow foundation system based on a grid of beams, designed to distribute loads while avoiding deep excavation, given the proximity to historic buildings and the complexity of the urban area.
